Romania is Proponent of Nabucco Gas Pipeline Project: Traian Basescu

Azerbaijan, Baku, 22 August / Trend / Romania is a proponent of realization of new projects such as Nabucco gas pipeline, President of Romania Traian Basescu said in Baku on 21 August, the joint statement for media said.

"The situation in Georgia showed that there is a need to pursue a policy which will enable the region to become alternative energy source for the European Union. The position of Romania and Azerbaijan on this issue is similar," Basescu said.

"Given the position of states in the region and EU, all energy projects must be further realized. The development of oil and gas export infrastructure is one of the key elements," Basescu said.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said that the energy policy of the country aims at promoting peace, security, prosperity and friendship in the region. "B securing economic interests of Azerbaijan, we will further try to provide energy security of Europe," Head of State of Azerbaijan said.

The great part of Azerbaijani oil is exported to Europe through Georgia. Oil and oil products from the Central Asia are transported to the Black Sea ports through Georgian territory. Part of gas will be dispatched through Georgia to Turkey were the foundation of Nabucco gas pipeline will be laid and it is expected to become operational by 2013 and run through Turkish territory onwards through Balkans to Austria.

This week Reinhard Mitchek, head of Gas Pipeline International said in his interview with Nefte Compass that that the conflict in Georgia did not affect the terms of implementation of Nabucco project and its cost.
