SOCAR to expand gas tanks by late 2009

The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) will expand the Garadag underground gas tank to three billion cubic meters before the end of 2009, Azerigaz Deputy Chairman Nazim Samadzade said.

"SOCAR launched the expansion of the tank. Its active volume will hit three billion cubic meters," Samadzade said.

Garadag's current active capacity is 500 million cubic meters.

The tank has a capacity of three billion cubic meters, Samadzade said.

There are two underground gas tanks in Azerbaijan - Garadag and Kalmaz.

Kalmaz's active capacity is 1.1 billion cubic meters.

Azerbaijan needs underground gas tanks to store gas in the summer and winter.

A total of 1.4 billion cubic meters were pumped into gas tanks in autumn and winter 2008-2009.

"Roughly 10 million cubic meters are extracted daily," Azerigaz head Alikhan Melikov said.
