The Baku Oil Refining Plant named after Heydar Aliyev is implementing preparatory works on technological modernization in order to reduce emissions of carbonic acid to atmosphere, a source from the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR) said. The project will be implemented within the framework of the Clean development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol.
"Definite work is under way, but full-scale work has not yet started," the source said.
The source did not specify the date for launching of full-scale work.
Head of SOCAR Ecology Department Azar Aliyev said earlier that reducing carbon dioxide emissions were planned through the improvement of the technological scheme and fueling system on refineries, as well as improved stoves burning fuel.
The works are also planned to implement on the second Baku refinery Azneftyag to the end of the year, Aliyev said.
Oil products are manufactured at two oil refining plants in Baku with a total capacity of 20 million tons of oil per year. Both plants are owned by SOCAR, which manufactures roughly 6 million tons of oil per day from offshore and onshore fields.
