SOCAR prepares for exploration drilling in Caspian Sea

The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) plans to drill the first exploration well at Umid prospective gas structure in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea this week, a source in SOCAR said on Aug.3. The company plans to develop the structure by its own funds.

"It is difficult to note the exact date, but drilling is likely to be launched this week", the source said.

According to experts, strong pressure is expected to take place in this structure. So, the preparations for drilling are carried out carefully.

SOCAR Bayil limani offshore drilling department will deal with drilling of exploration well.

Depth of the first exploration well will hit 6,500 meters. It is planned to drill 4,000 meters of well upon the plan, the source said.

Before, SOCAR completed construction of Umid-1 platform. Umid-1 platform built on the base of unfinished Chiraq-6 platform is the largest facility within the program.Its height is 72 meters. The platform was installed 15 kilometers from the Bulla Deniz field at the depth of 58 meters. A total of six gas wells are expected to be drilled from the platform.

Total expected gas reserves in Umid prospective field are estimated to the amount of 300 billion cubic meters and expected gas condensate reserves are estimated to the amount of 30-40 million tons.
