Syria and Turkey have signed a preliminary agreement to build a pipeline to deliver gas from Turkey, Energy Intelligence Group reported.

The signing the agreement did not specify the source of gas supplies to Syria. At present Turkey is importing natural gas from Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan.

As Turkey is currently importing less than the maximum contracted gas, the country could increase the volume of gas purchased from Russia, thus increasing the possibility of using Azerbaijani gas, a Turkish source told the International Oil newspaper.

A new connecting pipeline connecting Syria can be built in the eastern province Erzurum - where the pipeline between Turkey and Azerbaijan ends.

The pipeline can be built within two years, if a final agreement is reached.

During a visit to Baku in July, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad reached an agreement with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev to import one billion cubic meters of gas through Turkey.

Today, Syria is importing 1.27 million cubic meters of gas per day from Egypt via the Arab Gas Pipeline. The plan is to increase this volume to 6 million cubic meters by 2013.
