SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) will complete drilling the first exploration well in the prospective gas condensate structure Umid in late 2010, a source in SOCAR said on Nov. 24. "Drilling this well is supposed to be completed in November and October next year," said the source.

The source said that currently drilling of the well is continuing. Currently the depth of the well is 6,500 meters.

Although the drilling of the exploration well was launched in August, the company works quite rapidly. According to the source, the drilling would not be difficult to a depth of 3,500-4,000 meters. "The drilling will proceed more difficult in deeper places," the source said formerly noting that this plot is differentiates for its complex tectonics and geology.

This is the first exploration drilling the company has implemented independently for the past 15 years. The gas reserves expected from the Umid field are estimated at 300 billion cubic meters and the gas condensate reserves expected are estimated at 30-40 million tons.

Earlier, SOCAR completed constructing the Umid-1 platform. The Umid-1 platform was built on the base of the unfinished Chiraq-6 platform, the largest facility within the program. Its height is 72 meters. The platform was installed in the 15 kilometers of the Bulla Deniz field at a depth of 58 meters. A total of six gas wells are expected to be drilled from the platform.
