The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) expands the first exploration well drilled in the Umid perspective offshore structure in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, a SOCAR source said.

The well is drilled to a depth of 3300 meter and presently the company expands it, the source said.

According to the source, works to expand the well is being done to facilitate the process of injecting casing tube into the well.

"It is expected to complete drilling of exploration wells in late 2010 or early 2011. At the moment, the drilling continues," the source said.

According to the source, total depth of the well is 3,300 meters of the projected 6,500 meters now.

This perspective structure is different than others with its complex geology and seismic, another source in SOCAR said earlier.

This is the first exploration drilling the company has implemented independently for the past 15 years. The gas reserves expected from the Umid field are estimated at 300 billion cubic meters and the gas condensate reserves are estimated at 30-40 million tons.

Earlier, SOCAR completed constructing the Umid-1 platform. The Umid-1 platform was built on the base of the unfinished Chiraq-6 platform, the largest facility within the program. Its height is 72 meters.

The platform was installed on the 15-kilometers Bulla Deniz field at a depth of 58 meters. A total of six gas wells are expected to be drilled.
