Potential gas importers for Southern Corridor increase demand for fuel by almost 5.5 percent

Demand for gas in the countries intending to buy fuel within the Southern Gas Corridor's projects increased by 10.1 billion in 2010 compared to 2009 and amounted to 198 billion cubic meters, BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2011 says.

Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania (Nabucco project members), Greece and Italy (ITGI, TAP projects) are among the countries announcing about their intention to buy gas within the Southern Gas Corridor.

According to BP estimates, gas demand in these countries in 2009 amounted to 187.9 billion cubic meters, while in 2000 - 185.6 billion cubic meters.

The Southern Corridor is a priority EU energy project which will diversify energy supply routes and sources, and increase EU energy security. The Southern Corridor includes the Nabucco gas pipeline, Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), White Stream, and ITGI (Turkey-Greece-Italy pipeline).

According to BP, gas production in Germany in 2010 amounted to 10.6 billion cubic meters, which is 12.7 percent less than the production in 2009. Reduction in gas production was also observed in Romania last year. According to BP data, gas production in the country in 2010 amounted to 10.9 billion cubic meters compared to 11.3 billion cubic meters in 2009. Gas production increased by 3.6 percent and amounted to 7.6 billion cubic meters in Italy in 2010.
