Negotiations regarding the Karachaganak field between the Kazakh government and shareholders of the project will last six more months, Kazakh Minister of Oil and Gas Sauat Minbayev told reporters during VI Eurasian energy forum KazEnergy, held in Astana.
"There are a lot of nuances during the negotiations, since discussions are conducted on absolutely everything. Therefore, it would be advisable for both sides to consider all fully," said Minbayev.
Earlier the decision on the controversial issues on the project was expected to be taken by the end of 2011. Also, previously the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Masimov said that Kazakhstan intends to join the Karachaganak project with a share of ten percent.
According to Mynbayev, the negotiations with the shareholders of the Karachaganak project did not cover the question of writing off taxes in exchange for a share of Kazakhstan in the project.
Karachaganak with reserves of 1.2 billion tons of oil and condensate and more than 1.35 trillion cubic meters of gas is one of the largest operating oil and gas fields in the world. The Karachaganak field produces about 49 percent of all gas and 18 percent of all oil production in Kazakhstan.
Karachaganak Petroleum Operating (KPO) is a consortium of companies joined together to implement the Karachaganak project. The consortium includes BG Group, Eni, the share of each of which is 32.5 percent, and Chevron - 20 percent and Lukoil - 15 percent.
