SOCAR intensifies ecologic control in Caspian Sea

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) took over the control of process of the Caspian Sea pollution as a result of oil and gas production and refining, SOCAR head Rovnag Abdullayev told journalists on Wednesday.

"Prevention and minimization of the Caspian Sea pollution are one of the main goals of SOCAR. In particular, due to undertaken activities, and start of operation of specific treatment facilities, water quality discharged from oil refineries into the sea, have been brought into line with state standards," Abdullayev said.

The company has a certain capacity to prevent the sea pollution and constant work is underway in this sphere, Abdullayev said.

He said at present a program of ecological activities is under preparation, the company also conducts regular monitoring on the fields and offshore facilities to identify pollution sources, thereby taking full control over the ecological situation in the Caspian Sea.

SOCAR includes Azneft production association (the companies producing oil and gas onshore and offshore), "Azerkimya" industrial association (chemical enterprises), Azerigaz industrial association (gas distribution).

SOCAR is the only producer of oil products in the country (it has two refineries on its balance), and also owns petrol stations in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine.
