Some 15 billion cubic meters of associated gas is burnt off at the Iranian oilfields a year. The country loses around $3 billion annually due to this.
Since 2001, Iran's annual gas imports exceeded its exports by nearly 71 billion cubic meters on the average, the Pana news agency reported.
Iran is the second in the world on terms of the largest gas fields.
According to OPEC's annual report (published in July), Iran's gas reserves increased by 11.8 percent up to 33.090 trillion cubic meters in 2010 compared to 2009.
