A pipe broken as a result freezing could cause a fire at furnace in an oil refinery in the Kazakh city of Shymkent, oil refinery technical director Sergei Pilipenko said.

A pipe broken as a result freezing could cause a fire at furnace in an oil refinery in the Kazakh city of Shymkent, oil refinery technical director Sergei Pilipenko said.

"There was a fire in additional furnace for oil refining. It was extinguished by the staff within 5 minutes. Then firemen eliminated the fire. Leak apparently occurred due to cold weather, a pipe was broken, according to the preliminary supposition. No casualties and injured are reported, it has not affected operation of the plant, as it is not the main production," Pilipenko said.

The Shymkent plant caught fire on Feb. 6. The fire was promptly extinguished. No casualties and injured were recorded.
