Tajikistan interested in purchase of Turkmen energy resources

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and the Prime Minister of Tajikistan Akil Akilov have discussed cooperation in the energy sector in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government said on Thursday.

"The possibility of establishing mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy sector, as well as issues relating to major infrastructure projects such as building a gas pipeline through Afghanistan and the railway which will be of great importance not only for Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, but also for the whole region," the information said.

The meeting marked the two countries' common approaches to key issues of international and regional policy, as well as a steady trend towards consolidation and the full extension of fruitful cooperation in a number of key areas, primarily in trade, economic and energy spheres which has been continuing for the recent years.

The sides expressed confidence in further intensifying fruitful intergovernmental dialogue built on the basis of the existing capacity, national interests and priorities of national development.

Tajikistan is experiencing a shortage of electricity and natural gas of which the largest supplier in Central Asia is Turkmenistan.

The existing transport infrastructure allows Ashgabat to export electricity to Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asia. Dushanbe is interested in buying processed products of the Turkmenistan energy sector.
