The contractor to prepare a feasibility study on the establishment of new power plants on wind power regeneration in Azerbaijan will be determined by the end of July, chairman of the committee on the elimination of the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Jamil Melikov told Trend.

On June 1, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree establishing a state company for alternative and renewable energy. This has been created on the basis of the State Agency for Alternative Energy.

Location of a new plant for regeneration of wind energy in Azerbaijan was selected on the basis of a wind atlas, prepared by the German development bank KfW. A new power plant will be built in the Absheron district of Azerbaijan 40 kilometres along the road from Baku to the village of Gobustan.

Melikov noted that the current process of selecting a contractor for the preparation of feasibility studies by the KfW is nearing completion and agreement with the contractor may be signed by the end of the month.

"The process of selecting the winner of the tender is nearing completion. That company will prepare a feasibility study for this project," Melikov said.

According to initial reports, the capacity of the new power plant will be 80-100 MW. However more details of the project will only be revealed after the preparation of a feasibility study.

Earlier, German development bank KfW expressed its readiness to provide 130 million euros for development of renewable energy in Azerbaijan. Initially, the bank was going to allocate 40 million euros for this purpose. Credit will be given to the State Agency directly, although the possibility of project financing through local banks was previously discussed.
