Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 29 / Trend E.Ismayilov /

SOCAR is considering the establishment of an underground gas storage facility in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, a source told Trend on Wednesday.

He said that to the south of the city of Nakhchivan there are underground salt deposits, which creates the opportunity to build an underground gas storage facility.

"To implement this idea it's necessary to drill wells and carry out leaching of salt," the source said.

He said SOCAR plans to begin work on drilling wells in this area.

"Work on drilling is not conducted yet, but it is planned that in the near future drilling in this area will begin," he stressed.

He said the creation of an underground gas storage facility is needed to meet the needs of the republic for gas and to strengthen its energy security.

Azerbaijan has two underground gas storage facilities called Kalmaz and Garadag.
