Construction of a number of small hydropower stations in different regions of Azerbaijan is nearing completion, Azerenerji, the production and distribution of electric power in Azerbaijan, reported to Trend on Thursday.
Construction of small hydropower stations is being conducted in the Gusar, Ismayilli regions in particular.
"Construction of the 'Fizuli-1' station which will be commissioned at the end of the year, is also nearing completion," Azerenerji noted.
Construction of small hydropower stations are one of the development areas of alternative energy resources, reducing the dependence on fuel during the process of electric power production, as well as the use of the country's hydropower potential.
According to preliminary calculations, theoretically the hydropower potential of all the rivers in Azerbaijan amounts to 40 billion kilowatt/ hours. In spite of this, according to technical estimations, the use of 16 billion kilowatt/ hour is possible.
The capacity of electric power stations owned by Azerenerji, exceeds 6000 megawatts. Over 200 substations with a capacity of 500, 330, 220 and 110 kilovolts and six hydropower stations and 13 thermal power stations are owned by Azerenerji.
