The 12th International Electricity Exhibition of Iran will open on Thursday at the Tehran Permanent International Fairgrounds, ISNA reported.

The event will run till Sunday. Over 350 Iranian and foreign companies will showcase their latest achievements and products at the expo.

France, Italy, China, Turkey, and South Korea are some of the foreign participants.

With plans to celebrate its electricity industry's self-sufficiency, Iran has announced it has completely stopped importing spare equipment and parts for its power plants.

On August 9, Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad told the Mehr News Agency that the Iranian electricity industry's production, transmission and distribution operations have achieved a 98 per cent self-sufficiency level despite the international sanctions levelled against Iran.

Although the design, engineering, installation and operation of electricity transmission and distribution equipment are entirely performed by Iranian companies, the industry is 96 per cent self-sufficient in power plant generation.

Domestic companies' share in the electricity industry increased by three per cent since Iran's New Year began on March 20.

That brings annual savings of foreign currency that would otherwise have been spent on imports to $100 million (USD) this year.

The government predicts it will become completely self-sufficient in the electricity generation chain by the end of this year and plans to hold celebrations to mark the achievement.
