Kazakhstan to hold comprehensive analysis of shale gas developing posibilities

Kazakhstan will hold a comprehensive analysis of the feasibility of developing shale gas, one of the leaders of the National Welfare Fund Samruk-Kazyna told Trend on Thursday on condition of anonymity.

"As a result of examination, we can determine the future perspective of shale gas development," the source said.

The source said Samruk-Kazyna announced a tender Technical specification for the development of the study The use of unconventional gas, with a focus on shale gas earlier. Its results will be announced on November 23. Study itself will be held for three months.

The purpose of this study is to determine the presence and technical capacity of shale gas in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the analysis of the existing legal framework and proposals for improvement of the legal regulation of the sector.

The study also aims to assess the prospects for extraction/production of shale gas in Kazakhstan and the impact of unconventional gas in the energy market of the country.

The study also should address the technical and geological evidence for the existence of deposits, resource mapping, understanding and evaluation of the size of the available resources, models / scenarios sector of regulation of energy production and access to the energy market.

In addition, the study should conduct a detailed analysis of existing and potential technologies for extracting shale gas.

Besides the analysis of shale gas, the study will analyze such sources as coal bed methane and tight gas formations.

"The energy model should be the important part of the study, which will provide scenarios for demand, capacity, production, sales and other indicators in the use of unconventional gas in the Republic of Kazakhstan," the source said.
