Georgia not to abandon major HPP construction

Georgia does not abandon the projects on major HPP construction, Georgian Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Marika Valishvili told Trend over phone on Tuesday.

"There are no significant changes in the plan on hydroelectric power station's construction. The government supports the plan. Some 15 projects are already under construction. The other projects are at the stage of feasibility studies. Investors are working on these projects' examination and have held a number of consultation meetings with the environmentalists. All the existing problems are being resolved in the working process," Valishvili said.

According to the Deputy Minister, the decision on major HPP will be taken in accordance with the law.

In particular, the project of Khudoni HPP is at the stage of feasibility study.

"The building permit should be received to realize the project," Valishvili said.

The building permit on other major Darial HPP has already been issued and the project is being implemented in accordance with the law.

"If any violations occur in the process of building permit issuing, the measures will be taken," Valishvili said.

In Adjara region, only one project obtained the building permit. The other projects are under development.

"Depending on the economic, technical and environmental component of the project the decision on its construction will be taken," Deputy Minister said.
