Coal gas will cost less for Kazakhstan than shale gas, the chairman of the board of KazMunaiGas JSC Lyazzat Kiinov said.

"According to our information the slates are not that cheap. Our data indicates they are unprofitable, not to mention the fact that it is very dirty technology," Kiinov said during his speech at a meeting with representatives of national companies and ministries during the debate on the future development of the country's gas-fired generation.

According to him, talking about technology for production of gas from shale deposits is deliberately maintained by those countries that are currently interested in a speedy resolution of problems related to providing gas self-sufficiency.

"Talks about shale deposits have recently been conducted by those interested in lowering gas prices. Those countries with no gas reserves talk about the development of shale deposits, so that gas producing countries would lower their prices," Kiinov said

According to him, despite the active promotion of technology for production of shale gas, the situation with the world market prices for natural gas has changed little and no reduction is observed in gas prices.

"I think in five years all the talk on producing shale gas will stop," Kiinov said.
