Azerbaijan, Baku, June 3 / Trend E. Ismailov /
Currently alternative and renewable energy in Azerbaijan is concentrated mainly in the field of hydroelectric power generation, representative of the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources Jamil Melikov said on Monday during the Baku Futures Forum held in Baku.
"About 10 per cent of the electricity generated in the country accounts for hydroelectric power. However, there are great opportunities for the generation of solar and wind energy as well as the construction of small hydro power plants," Malikov said.
As Malikov told reporters, the share of alternative energy sources in the total energy production is projected to reach 20 per cent by 2020. This is provided for in the strategy for the development of alternative energy which is currently under consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers.
According to the representative of the State Agency, all relevant government authorities have already submitted their reviews and recommendations on the strategy which include minor adjustments.
