Minister: One more TPP to be built in Turkey

A new thermal power plant (TPP) will be constructed in the Afyon province of Turkey, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz told Anadolu agency on Monday.

According to the minister, the total cost of the project is $5 billion. Terms of the construction of the new thermal power plants have not yet been defined, Yildiz said.

Yildiz also added that by 2023, one-third of all electric power will be produced in Turkey in thermal power plants.

As reported previously, 34 new power plants were put into operation in Turkey in the first quarter of 2013 and their installed capacity increased from 57,500 megawatts (as of 2012) to 57,700 megawatts.

Of the 24 commissioned power plants, five are gas power plants, two - wind power and three - thermal power plants. At least 27out of 34 commissioned plants were built by private companies.

Earlier, the Turkish state-owned electricity transmission company reported that the generation of electricity decreased by 5.2 per cent amounting to 58.8 billion kilowatt / hour in Turkey in the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012.
