Scottish company to supply electric meters to Turkmenistan

Turkmenenergo State Electric Power Corporation of Turkmenistan plans to sign a contract with Scottish Eagle Property Investments L.P. on purchase of electric meters with its equity.

The relevant decree was signed by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

"The contract will help to fulfill the goals of future strengthening the material and technical base of the electric power industry, reliable and uninterrupted power supply to the population and manufacturing facilities of Turkmenistan and strengthening the control over energy consumption," according to the document.

The European company is to deliver 154,000 electric meters to Turkmenistan under the new contract.

Power industry is one of the leading sectors of Turkmenistan's national economy. It is planned to invest over $5 billion in this sphere in accordance with the concept for development of power industry for the period until 2020.

Additionally, Turkmenistan also conducts work on expanding the electricity export to Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey. The possibilities of its transportation to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Caucasus countries are being studied.

Turkmenistan plans to bring the volume of electricity production to 27.4 billion kilowatt/hours by 2020 and to 35.5 billion kilowatt/hours by 2030.

Currently, some 10 power plants and 32 turbines operate in Turkmenistan's power supply system.
