Turkey, Georgia to construct dam on Kura River

Turkey and Georgia intend to implement a joint project on construction of a dam on the Kura River, Turkish Anadolu Agency quoted the country's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources as saying on May 7.

The Turkish side is expected to finance around 80 percent of the project cost, according to the minister.

Yildiz stressed that the new dam will be used at one of the hydropower plants of Georgia.

He went on to add that during the visit of Turkish President Abdullah Gul to Georgia, the two sides reached an agreement on selling electricity to European markets through Turkey.

Georgia's power plants generated around 2,485,230,000 kilowatt hours of electricity in Jan.-March, 2014, while the country imported some 246.36 million kilowatt hours of electricity in the first quarter of 2014.
