Construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline is being carried out at an accelerated pace, the Turkmen Dovlet Habarlary state news agency quoted the country’s President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov as saying.

Reportedly, Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister Maksat Babayev, who supervises the country’s energy industry, presented a report on the progress of work on TAPI.

Summarizing the report, Berdimuhamedov stressed that this project should be “in focus of unflagging attention”.

The Turkmen media outlets reported in September that it is planned to hold an international tender for the purchase of pipes, materials and equipment needed to implement the TAPI gas pipeline project in 2018 and the pipeline’s commissioning in 2019.

The construction of the Turkmen section of TAPI pipeline was launched in December 2015. Ashgabat expects that the gas pipeline, with a capacity of 33 billion cubic meters of gas, will be launched in 2019. The project is promoted by the Asian Development Bank.
