Cleaning work is to be carried out in oil-contaminated areas of Balkan province in Turkmenistan, local newspaper Vatan reported.

According to the Turkmen president’s decree, Turkmenneft State Concern will sign a corresponding contract with Mawy Kenar local joint enterprise.

The Turkmenneft State Concern jointly with the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Environment Protection and Land Resources and the Balkan province administration are instructed to draft and submit a work plan.

Turkmenneft carries out fast-paced exploration-drilling operations at oil fields in Balkan province, which is a western part of the country.

The Barsagelmes, Goturdepe, Ordekli and Altyngui oil fields are currently being explored. Because of the country’s proven large natural gas reserves, main work now is aimed at prospecting of oil fields, especially in Miocene fields in the south-western part and Jurassic-Cretaceous deposits in the central part of the country.

Turkmenneft is the main oil producer of Turkmenistan. Such foreign companies as Burren Energy (Eni’s branch), Mitro, Dragon Oil and Petronas are also operating in the country.
