Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR is working to improve the gas supply to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Iskender Shirali, head of the SOCAR Integrated Drilling Trust, said Feb. 20.

“In order to improve reliable gas supply to Nakhchivan, the SOCAR Integrated Drilling Trust drilled four appraisal wells in the autonomous republic as part of the project to create an underground gas storage facility there,” Shirali said.

He also added that the drilling of production well No. 123 at the Bulla Deniz field became important success of the Trust in 2017. The well was drilled in record short time - 227 days, he noted.

Azerbaijan carries out gas deliveries to Iran in order to meet the needs of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, located in the blockade because of the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia.

There are two underground gas storage facilities – Kalmaz and Garadagh – in Azerbaijan.
