Around 1,863 exploration work was carried out in Turkey to search for new oil and gas fields as of late 2017, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey told Trend.
The ministry said that 922 work on exploration of new oil and gas fields was carried out by the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO), 61 work – by General Directorate of the Mineral Research & Exploration of Turkey (Maden Tetkik ve Arama Genel Mudurlugu), 141 work – by local companies, 544 work – by foreign companies, and 195 work – by joint consortia.
"The total depth of the wells drilled during exploration work implemented by TPAO was 2 236,397 meters," the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also noted that the depth of the wells drilled during exploration work conducted by Maden Tetkik ve Arama Genel Mudurlugu was 92 599 meters, and the depth of exploration wells drilled by local companies was 156,949 meters, the depth of exploration wells drilled by foreign companies stood at 978,266 meters, and the depth of exploration wells drilled by the joint consortia was 412,297 meters.
The ministry noted that a total of 901 oil and gas fields were discovered in Turkey as of the end of 2017.
"Some 489 oil and gas fields were discovered as part of the exploration work conducted by TPAO," the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also noted that 8 oil and gas fields were found by Maden Tetkik ve Arama Genel Mudurlugu, 17 fields - by local companies, 300 fields - by foreign companies, and 87 fields - by joint consortia as part of the exploration work.
The law permitting oil exploration in forests and national parks came into force in Turkey in April 2014.
According to the report of the Ministry of Energy, a total of 56 wells have been drilled within the framework of exploration of new oil and gas fields in Turkey since 2014, of which 54 are situated onshore, and two are located offshore.
