The project of modernization and reconstruction of the Shymkent oil refinery in Kazakhstan has passed into the final stage, the press service of the enterprise said in a statement.

The main technological operation – the reception of raw materials in the catalytic cracking reactor was carried out at the Shymkent refinery Aug. 15.

The liquid phase catalytic cracking unit with a processing capacity of 2 million tons of raw materials per year has been designed and built according to the technology of the American UOP LLC company.

"Before the reception of straight-run fuel oil, a stable reception of energy resources – fuel gas, electricity, cooling water, instrumental air, nitrogen and water vapor has been provided, the energy equipment, field devices, a distributed process control and emergency protection, fuel oil circulation systems have been connected," the company said in a statement.

The complex of catalytic cracking of the liquid phase will allow for increasing the depth of processing at the plant, and for producing gasoline and diesel fuel with the quality corresponding to emission standards K-4 and K-5, the message said.

The completion of the Shymkent refinery modernization project has been scheduled for September 2018.

Shymkent oil refinery, built in 1985, is the latest refinery in the country. The plant manufactures 30 percent of the total volume of oil products manufactured by three refineries in Kazakhstan.

The project of modernization of Shymkent refinery started in 2011 as part of the New Industrialization Program. Last year, the Development Bank of Kazakhstan JSC opened a credit line in the amount of $932 million for the completion of this project for a period of 13 years.
