By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
A new wind farm will be built in Georgia, said Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava, Trend reports citing Georgian media outlets.
According to minister, the capacity of the wind farm will be 50 MW.
“At a government meeting, we approved the concept of building a new wind farm. This 50 megawatt wind farm will be built in Gori region in Eastern Georgia. This project is important not only because it will provide electricity based on our local resources, but also because we have taken another step towards creating a more environmentally friendly, more diversified and renewable energy sector,” Turnava said.
According to Turnava, there is already a serious investor in the project, Turkish company Çalık Holding. Therefore, all these factors together give confidence that this project will be implemented very quickly, the minister said.
Last month Turnava stated that in 2020, five new wind farms with a total capacity of 270 MW will start operating in Georgia.
The Ministry of Energy of Georgia has been actively working on development of alternative energy sources in recent years. Today, one wind farm with a capacity of 20 MW operates in Gori.
"We conducted studies to research wind energy, according to which the Georgian power system has fixed opportunities for integrating wind energy," Turnava said.
