Georgia reduces electricity consumption

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 18

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgia consumed 961.6 million kWh in October 2019, which is 1.7 percent less than the same period last year (977.9 million kWh), Trend reports citing Georgian Electricity System Commercial Operator of Georgia (ESCO).

Meanwhile, electricity consumption in Georgia from January through October 2019 reached 10.8 billion kWh. For the same period in 2018, this figure amounted to 10.9 billion kWh.

Although electricity consumption has decreased compared to last year, the country still needs to import resources, according to ESCO.

In October 2019, Georgia imported 196.6 million kWh of electricity. Some 99 percent of this (194 million kWh) came from Russia.

In October this year, electricity imports to Georgia decreased by 15 percent compared to October last year. One of the reasons was the warm weather in Georgia in October.

From January through October, imports amounted to about 1.2 billion kWh, which is 15 percent more than the same period last year.

Since 2006, the Electricity System Commercial Operator of Georgia has been providing stability to the Georgian electric power sector, uninterrupted electricity supply to the country and active development of the Georgian energy system.
