Energy facilities being modernized in eastern Turkmenistan

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, Dec. 11

By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

A new phase of work on modernization of energy facilities in the Amu Darya valley has been carried out in Turkmenistan’s Lebap region, Trend reports with reference to the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.

After technical re-equipment, the Halach and Chokhpetde power substations with a capacity of 110/10 kilowatts started operating in the Halach district. Thereby, the efficiency of energy supply of settlements and national economic facilities has been increased.

A powerful infrastructure has been created in the Turkmen eastern region to generate electricity and provide uninterrupted supply to cities and villages, new power lines and specialized facilities are being built, the report said.

The total length of power lines of various capacities in the Amu Darya valley exceeds 13,000 kilometers. Over 3,500 power substations are operating.

It is also reported that with the commissioning of a major gas turbine power plant in the territory of the Charjev district, the volume of supplies of Turkmen electricity for export will increase significantly.

The gas turbine power plant project is being implemented by the Japanese Sumitomo corporation. The facility will consist of three Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems gas turbine units, each with capacity of 144 megawatts.

The power plant, with capacity of 432 megawatts, will become the tenth generating facility built in Turkmenistan since the beginning of this century. The total capacity of these facilities is 6,511 megawatts, the Turkmen Energy Ministry previously reported.

Launching the power plant in 2021 will be an important step in implementing a strategy to increase the annual amount of electricity produced in Turkmenistan to 33 billion kilowatt-hours.

The project will be financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and other Japanese financial institutions, with which Turkmen State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs concluded loan agreements for $152.6 million and 13.1 billion Japanese yen ($120.4 million).

Building up potential of the industry will contribute to a further increase in the export of Turkmen electricity, primarily to Afghanistan.
