By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Twenty-one renewable energy sources (RES) of more than 504.5 MW of capacity were put into operation in Kazakhstan in 2019, Trend reports with reference to the press office of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy.

According to the ministry, currently, 90 RES of 1,050 MW of capacity are operating in Kazakhstan including 19 wind parks (283.8 MW), 31 solar parks (541.7 MW), 37 hydropower plants (222.2 MW) and three biopower plants.

This year, the number of RES is to be increased from 90 to 108 with the total capacity of 1,655 MW.

The ministry plans to increase RES capacities and reach planned three percent of RES in the total volume of electricity production in 2020. This will allow to implement larger RES projects in order to reach planned 10 percent by 2030.

The ministry notes that the RES projects selection is implemented via action since 2018. This mechanism allowed to make selection process more clear and use more advanced technologies to minimize electricity tariffs.

In 2018-2019, the auctions were held online for selection of 1,205 MW of RES projects.

Some 138 companies from 12 countries worldwide took part in the first auction. Following the auction, agreements with 42 companies were signed.
