Galt & Taggart: Import of electricity to Georgia up in 1Q2020

Import of electricity to Georgia increased by 39.6 percent year-on-year and accounted for 21.3 percent of total supply in first quarter of 2020, Trend reports citing Georgian Galt & Taggart investment company.

Some 54.1 percent of electricity was imported from Azerbaijan and the rest volume of electricity came from Russia (45.9 percent of total).

Most significant increase of imports took place in February 2020 (+119 percent year-on-year), compared to 17.9 percent year-on-year and 4.3 percent year-on-year growth figures in January 2020 and March 2020, respectively.

The cost of electricity imports was up by 25.7 percent year-on-year and reached $29 million in first quarter of 2020. The export of electricity was insignificant in first quarter of 2020, as expected.

Electricity transit from Azerbaijan to Turkey through Georgia increased by 3.4 times and reached 51.1 GWh in the first quarter of 2020, 10 percent below the high transit levels of 2016.

Balancing electricity price in Georgia was USc 5.4/kWh (+5.8 percent year-on-year) in first quarter of 2020. According to the report, 25.9 percent of total electricity supplied to the grid was traded through the Electricity System Commercial Operator of Georgia (ESCO), with the rest volume traded through bilateral contracts.

Balancing electricity price mostly derived from import price and guaranteed power purchase agreements (PPA) tariffs, accounting for 61 percent and 36.4 percent of total balancing electricity, respectively.
