Kazakhstan eyes turning its household waste into electricity

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jun. 5

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

The possibility of implementing the WASTE-TO-ENERGY project, which oversees introduction of processing solid municipal waste (SMW) into energy is being considered in Kazakhstan, Trend reports with reference to the press office of Kazakhstan-based International Green Technologies & Investments Center.

The problem of household waste accumulation is relevant for Kazakhstan. The volume of solid waste in the country is growing annually and currently over 120 million tons of waste has already been accumulated at 3,500 landfills and more than 4.5 million tons are generated annually.

This is the first time that such kind of project will be implemented in Kazakhstan. The project oversees the study of the morphological composition, chemical properties and energy indicators of solid waste at landfills in Kazakh region.

The project also includes development of technological documentation, engineering and geological surveys for the construction of power plants operating on solid waste, organization of a project auction for the selection of investors and so on. In order to implement the project, international companies with successful experience in the waste-to-energy field will be attracted for cooperation with Kazakhstan’s organizations.

“Sorting and processing of solid waste in the country does not exceed 15 percent in Kazakhstan, while globally this figure reaches 70 percent.

It’s impossible to process SMW completely, therefore some of the waste, i.e. 30 to 50 percent must be disposed of using waste-to-energy technology with further generation of electricity and thermal energy at stations,” Ramazan Zhampiissov, CEO of International Green Technologies & Investments Center said.

The report also said that the thermal utilization of household waste can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which also is especially important for Kazakhstan in order to fulfill its obligations under The Paris Agreement. Currently, annual emissions from Kazakh landfills amount to 5.4 million tons of СО₂.
