IGB’s construction to be significantly accelerated in two weeks

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 12

By Leman Zeynalova - Trend:

The construction of the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB), which envisages transportation of Azerbaijani gas to Bulgaria, will even more accelerated in two weeks, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said in a phone conversation with US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Trend reports citing Bulgaria's national news agency BTA.

Borissov noted the progress in the construction of the interconnector, which will provide an opportunity for the entire region to receive alternative supplies of natural gas from various sources, including the Caspian region.

Borissov added that at the moment the construction is going at an accelerated pace, as the cleared route on Bulgarian territory is over 50 km, and on Greek - over 15 km.

“It is expected that in two weeks the Greek company AWACS will bring to Bulgaria an automatic welding machine, which will significantly increase the speed of construction of the interconnector. The production and delivery of pipes is also carried out intensively and over 70 km of the pipes have been delivered and stored in three bases in Bulgaria,” he said.

Borissov pointed out that the project for construction of the liquefied gas terminal near Alexandroupolis is in full synergy with the interconnector.

The IGB project envisages the construction of a gas interconnector that will link the gas transmission systems of Greece and Bulgaria. The total length of the gas pipeline is 182.6 km, and its capacity for gas transmission is 3 billion cubic meters per year with the option to reach 5 billion cubic meters.

The route of the gas pipeline is divided into 7 main lots, the shortest being 9.55 km long and the longest - 71.90 km. 106 km of the route in Bulgaria will be completed with automatic welding, and the remaining 45 km - by manual welding.
