BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jun. 20

By Nargiz Sadikhova – Trend:

Support of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) of Central Asia Regional Electricity Market (CAREM) establishing aims to maximize trading between the countries, USAID office in Kazakhstan official told Trend.

The official said that USAID is providing assistance to all the Central Asian countries and has been working with Kazakhstan for several years.

Within the framework of CAREM project's implementation, USAID provides assistance in the establishment of the Central Asia Regional Electricity Market.

The CAREM is expected to deploy the lowest-cost power from across the Central Asian countries to meet the needs of each country, lowering costs, and support of greater economic and social development, the official said.

“CAREM will not only save money and enhance energy security and economic stability; it will also facilitate commercial trade transactions and attract investments in the power sectors of all five Central Asian and neighboring South Asian countries,” the representative said.

USAID’s support of CAREM aims to maximize trading between the countries by reducing trade barriers and helps the governments of the Central Asian countries to create the conditions for increasing electricity trading across the borders, said the office.

The ultimate goal of the Central Asia Regional Electricity Market activity is an integrated power market with effective regional institutions that ensure fair and consistent transactions for all countries; common standards for performance; fair and non-discriminatory pricing; and full access to the power grid.

USAID is the lead US Government agency that works to end extreme global poverty and enable resilient, democratic societies to realize their potential.
