Turkmenistan working on strategy for renewable energy sector development

Turkmenistan is working on a strategy for the development of renewable energy sector, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

Ways to develop renewable energy field were discussed during the first meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group on the working out the National Strategy of Turkmenistan on the Development of Renewable Energy with the participation of international organizations that was held via videoconference on July 9, 2020.

During the meeting, the participants spoke about such topics as: Global trends and prospects for the use of renewable energy sources in Turkmenistan, Ways of developing renewable energy in Turkmenistan, Implementation of scientific projects based on renewable energy sources, Using international experience to develop the National Strategy of Turkmenistan on the development of renewable energy.

In addition, the parties discussed the activities of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) center in Ashgabat in providing support in the field of renewable energy development, and of the prospects of cooperation between the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the development of renewable energy.

As it was reported earlier, Interdepartmental Working Group on National Strategy of Turkmenistan on Development of Renewable Energy and its composition was approved by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in late June.

The decree was signed by the president during a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers in order to develop on a systematic basis a national strategy for the development of renewable energy, ensuring energy stability in the country.

Earlier, the president of Turkmenistan approved the proposal to nominate the country for election to the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) from 2021 through 2022.

Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the United Arab Emirates Serdarmammet Garajayev has been appointed permanent representative of Turkmenistan to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
