Azerbaijan's SOCAR talks construction of steam turbogenerator at Azerkimya's plant

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 11

By Nargiz Ismayilova - Trend:

Construction of a new steam generator within modernization of Ethylene-Polyethylene Plant of Azerkimya Production Union (PU) is planned to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2020, Deputy Head of Public Relations and Events Department at Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company (SOCAR) Ibrahim Ahmadov told Trend.

The construction of the generator with the aim of boosting the energy efficiency of the steam generating complex and producing additional energy is another big project of SOCAR’s Azerkimya PU, Ahmadov added.

“To this end, SOCAR signed an agreement with the German Uniper company and created a SOCAR-UNIPER joint venture in 2016. The project’s aim is to increase the current design capacity of 32 megawatts per hour, while it is actually 13 megawatts per hour, of the steam generating complex to 65 megawatts per hour,” he said.

“An auxiliary turbogenerator will be installed, and the existing technological system will be improved. During the project, the existing old substations will be reconstructed into completely new modern facilities by internal resources of Azerkimya PU,” he noted.

Ahmadov added that after completion of the project, the demand for 30 megawatts per hour of electricity currently received by Azerkimya PU from Sumgayit electric networks will be fully covered.

“The excess 35 megawatts of electricity will be transferred through the networks to other SOCAR facilities, as well as to other consumers in Sumgayit city”, the deputy head added.

Ahmadov noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected large-scale reconstruction and modernization projects carried out at Azerkimya.

“First of all, this impacts the efficiency of physical work in this area. At the same time, due to the closure of borders, the participation of representatives of contracting companies and producers in the initial set-up and adjustment work makes it impossible or postpones the project for an indefinite period," he concluded.
