GCF ready to offer planning to help Kazakhstan expand move towards green economy

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 6

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Kazakhstan could expand its shift towards 'green economy', Urvaksh Patel, GCF Regional Manager for Eastern Europe and Central Asia told Trend.

Patel explained that GCF stands ready to support the climate ambitions of developing countries and does not make assessments about domestic policies.

"Through its Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme, GCF can support country-level planning efforts to help Kazakhstan accelerate the transition," Patel said, reminding that Kazakhstan has the largest economy in the Central Asian region.

Patel also added that GCF can support the country to think through strategies to diversify its economy into cleaner and more climate-friendly sectors.

“We can also provide support to the country through technical advisory assistance and/or related support to bolster the country’s decision-making capacities for more climate-friendly investments. One example of this could be through better monitoring and data provision, which allows for more evidence-based, objective decision making; another example could be through supporting mechanisms across government, private sector, and other stakeholders to generate more transformative ideas for climate change-related investments,” Patel concluded.

GCF is a global platform to respond to climate change by investing in low-emission and climate-resilient development. GCF was established by 194 governments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in developing countries, and to help vulnerable societies adapt to the unavoidable impacts of the climate change.

Given the urgency and seriousness of this challenge, GCF is mandated to make an ambitious contribution to the united global response to climate change.
