Azerbaijan outlines priority of alternative energy sources dev't for next 10 years

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 22

Trend:

Today, one of Azerbaijan’s main goals is to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity capacity up to 30 percent by 2030 by creating additional capacity of 1,500 megawatts, Jahid Mikayilov, spokesman for the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry, told Trend.

"It is planned to increase the share of renewable energy sources by creating additional capacity of 440 megawatts in the period from 2020 through 2022," Mikayilov added.

"It is also planned to create additional capacity of 460 megawatts from 2023 through 2025 and 600 megawatts from 2026 through 2030," the spokesman said.

The spokesman stressed that the negotiations are being held with potential investors to implement new projects.

"For these purposes, a number of sources with the potential of solar and wind energy have been determined," Mikayilov said.

Mikayilov summed up that Azerbaijan has already prepared a bill "On the use of renewable energy sources in the production of electricity" and the approval process is currently underway.

After the adoption of the law, it is also planned to hold auctions for the implementation of the projects on the land plots allocated for these purposes.

Azerbaijan is one of the leading energy centers in the region.

Azerbaijan generated 20.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through October 2020, which is 4.8 percent more than from January through October 2019.

Some 922.4 million kilowatt-hours of that volume accounted for the volume produced by hydroelectric power plants, which is 33.1 percent less than from January through October 2019.

Some 19.13 billion kilowatt-hours of that volume accounted for the volume produced by thermal power plants, which is 8.2 percent more than from January through October 2019.
