By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:
The European gas industry is going through a major transition, Eurogas told Trend.
Eurogas is an association representing the European gas wholesale, retail and distribution sectors.
“Achieving the EU’s ambition of a carbon neutral economy by 2050 requires a fundamental restructuring of our energy system. This includes coupling the electricity and the gas systems, integrating them with other economic sectors, while supporting Europe’s industrial competitiveness and citizens’ prosperity,” said the association.
Eurogas believes that the gas industry is committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050, but this won’t be possible without decarbonising the molecule.
“Switching from coal to gas in power generation, replacing inefficient oil and coal heaters with gas, using LNG in marine transport and for goods vehicles will significantly contribute to meeting the EU’s increased emissions reduction target by 2030. Further down the line, the deployment of biogas, biomethane and hydrogen will be indispensable for meeting the 2050 targets. This is what many gas companies are working on.
Clean gas technologies have strong potential to help achieve decarbonisation and reach climate goals. We are pleased to see that numerous European gas, technologies, and engineering companies tackle this opportunity to produce innovative gas technologies fit for the future.
Europe leads on the production of anaerobic digestors that produce biomethane, while EU-manufactured electrolysers produce hydrogen from electricity for use in transport, industry, heating and power. Homegrown industries manufacture CCS components and pyrolysis equipment, as well as LNG engines and gas turbines.
These technologies will bring wealth to Europe, secure high skilled non-seasonal jobs for European citizens, innovate EU businesses, and make Europe a climate leader in manufacturing and not only deploying clean tech,” said Eurogas.
