Azerbaijan’s wind energy capacity has increased from just 2 MW in 2010 to 66 MW in 2019, Trend reports citing Eni’s World Gas and Renewables Review 2020.

In 2015, the wind power capacity rose to 8 MW, then further increasing to 16 MW in 2016, and stabilizing at 66 MW in 2018 and 2019.

World’s Top 10 countries for the wind power capacity as of 2019 are China, the US, Germany, India, Spain, UK, France, Brazil, Canada and Italy. The total wind power capacity of world Top 10 is 517,731 MW, while the world wind energy capacity is 622,408 MW.

Solar photovoltaic power generation of Azerbaijan stood at 5 GWh in 2015, further rising to 35 GWh in 2016, 37 GWh in 2017, 39 GWh in 2018 and 44 GWh in 2019.

World’s Top 10 countries for the volume of solar photovoltaic power generation include China, US, Japan, India, Germany, Italy, Australia, South Korea, UK and France. The overall solar photovoltaic power generation of world Top 10 stood at 564,705 GWh.

In order to further develop its renewable energy potential, Azerbaijan has signed executive agreements with Acwa Power of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Masdar of the United Arab Emirates for the implementation of 240-megawatt wind and 200-megawatt solar energy projects.

“We have worked out draft agreements on the sale and purchase of electricity, as well as on connection to the electricity network in order to start the construction of those plants with the investments of abovementioned companies. Currently, these agreements are in the consultation phase. It is planned to start the construction of the plants by the companies after signing the final agreements and to put them into operation by 2023,” Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov earlier told Trend.
