Uzbekistan managed to reduce the amount of electricity debt among the population over the past two months by 40 billion soums ($3.82 million) due to the introduction of a billing system, Trend reports referring to Regional Electric Networks JSC.

According to First Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Regional Electric Network JSC Jakhongir Obidzhanov, the total debt for electricity in Uzbekistan amounted to 3.5 trillion soums ($334 million).

"This is a cumulative figure, that is, the total debt of legal entities and individuals," he said, adding that the largest debt for electricity is in the Samarkand region - 655 billion soums ($62.5 million).

At the same time, the debt of only individuals for electricity as of December 1 amounted to 2.34 trillion soums ($223 million). The same amount as of October 1 accounted for 2.38 trillion soums ($227 million).

"The amount of debt decreased by 40 billion soums ($3.82 million) within two months, which happened as a result of the introduction of a billing system," the head of the Regional Electric Networks explained.

It was noted that about 2.9 million, or 54 percent of consumers who have new meters, are now connected to the billing system, which allows automatic switching on of electricity.

In general, the AEMCS system (automated electricity metering and control system) will begin full-fledged operation after 100 percent coverage of subscribers, which is expected in April 2021.

According to the information, to date, 72 percent of consumers (5.3 million subscribers) have installed such meters.
