Uzbekistan’s electricity supplies to Afghanistan suspended

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 7

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Electricity supplies from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan have been suspended due to technical problems in Uzbekistan's power system, Trend reports referring to the Afghan energy company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS).

It was reported that the cutoffs have resulted in power outages in Kabul and several other cities of Afghanistan.

DABS officials said both sides are making efforts to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

According to DABS, electricity is currently supplied to the Afghan capital from domestic sources.

It was noted that electricity consumption in Afghanistan is growing every year. At the same time, the country is independently capable of providing only 19 percent of the needs. About 77 percent of electricity is exported from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran.

In addition, in the past year, the reduction in electricity supplies from Tajikistan has led to serious difficulties. Subsequently, Kabul increased the volume of electricity purchased from Uzbekistan.

In November 2020, it was reported that the Kabul authorities announced a 16 percent reduction in electricity supplies from Uzbekistan for technical reasons. This was followed by power outages in the Afghan capital.

Serious power outages led to the suspension of work of 80 percent of production sites in and around the capital.
