By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

The volume of electricity exported to Afghanistan by Uzbekistan has increased from 300 megawatts to 400 megawatts, Trend reports referring to Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat power distributor (DABS).

According to DABS, measures are being taken to increase imported electricity to 450 megawatts in order to improve the electricity supply to Afghanistan.

It was noted that the volume of electricity supplied by Uzbekistan fell to 150 megawatts for a while. As a result, in recent years, some parts of Kabul have been supplied with electricity for only 20 minutes.

DABS said that over the past 18 years, the international community has allocated $4 billion to improve the infrastructure of Afghanistan. In addition, DABS pays $100 million to Uzbekistan for electricity every year.

Before the decline in supplies, Uzbekistan imported 450 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan. Currently, Kabul can officially deliver 160 megawatts of electricity with its internal capabilities.

In the past 18 years, Afghanistan has bought electricity from Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, but has not invested in its domestic resources.

According to information, Afghanistan annually allocates $300 million for the purchase of electricity abroad.

Earlier it was reported that electricity supplies from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan have been suspended due to technical problems in Uzbekistan's power system. “The cutoffs have resulted in power outages in Kabul and several other cities of Afghanistan,” the message said.

In November 2020, it was reported that the Kabul authorities announced a 16 percent reduction in electricity supplies from Uzbekistan for technical reasons. This was followed by power outages in the Afghan capital. Serious power outages led to the suspension of work of 80 percent of production sites in and around the capital.
