Azerbaijan discloses electricity generation volume in 2020

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.7

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Azerbaijan generated slightly over 25.8 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh) of electricity in 2020 versus 26.08 billion KWh in 2019, down by 275.9 million kWh or 1.1 percent, Trend reports referring to the annual report of the country's Energy Ministry.

According to the report, last year the electricity generation at thermal power plants (TPPs) made up nearly 24.4 billion KWh, at hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) – around 1.07 billion KWh, including 45.5 million KWh - at small HPPs, and 343.5 million KWh – at other sources.

In the reporting year, the country's wind power plants (WPPs) generated 95.9 million kWh of electricity, and solar power plants (SPPs) - 47 million kWh.

"Electricity generation from January through December 2020 made up 23.03 billion kWh on Azerenergy OJSC (22.14 billion kWh at TPPs), 429 million kWh on State Energy Service of Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (230.8 million kWh at TPPs, 41.1 million kWh at SPPs), 2.27 million kWh on other PPs) and 75.1 million kWh at WPPs on Azerishig OJSC," the report said.

For the reporting period of 2020, Azalternativenergy LLC under the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources produced 10 million kWh of electricity from alternative and renewable energy sources. Of the 8.5 million kWh was transmitted to the general energy system.

Electricity exports in 2020 amounted to 1.15 billion kWh, which is 340.2 million kWh less than in 2019 while the imports to Azerbaijan - 136.4 million kWh, down 500,000 million kWh compared to the previous year.

Thus, out of 1.15 billion kWh of exported electricity, 204.1 million kWh accounted for Iran, 101.8 million kWh - for Turkey, 118.5 million kWh - for Russia, and 726.3 million kWh - for Georgia. Of the 136.4 million kWh of imported electricity, 29.7 million kWh came from Iran, 88.8 million kWh - from Russia, and 17.9 million kWh - from Georgia.

More than 5 cubic meters of natural gas were used to generate electricity at TPPs owned by Azerenergy OJSC and the State Energy Service of Nakhchivan AR.
