An agreement was signed on May 3, 2021 between Saudi ACWA Power, the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan on the implementation of a wind farm project in Karakalpakstan Republic, Trend reports referring to Uzbek energy ministry.

According to the ministry, the project includes the design, construction and operation of a 1,500 MW wind power project in Karakalpakstan Republic, which, once commissioned, will become the largest wind farm in the Central Asia region and one of the largest in the world.

Deputy Energy Minister of Uzbekistan Sherzod Khodjaev noted that ACWA Power project will greatly contribute to this process, adding that Uzbekistan plans to produce 25 percent of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030.

In addition, it is expected that the project will meet the electricity needs of about four million households and offset approximately 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, which will directly contribute to the Uzbekistan’s goals of significantly increasing electricity generation using renewable energy sources to meet growing demand.

Also, it was noted that the project is aimed at supporting the efforts of the government of Uzbekistan to diversify the country's energy balance in accordance with the ongoing strategic reforms in the energy sector.

Furthermore, ACWA Power is an investor in two wind power projects in Bukhara and Navoi regions, concluded earlier this year, with a combined generation capacity of 1,000 MW. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and investment agreements have been signed on them. In addition, the Saudi company is implementing a project for the construction of a highly efficient 1,500 MW gas-fired power plant in Syrdarya region.
