BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jun. 6

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Two hydroelectric power plants will be built on the Giz Galasi dam on the Araz River, which is located at Iran-Azerbaijan border, the Executive Director of East Azerbaijan Regional Water Company Yousef Ghaffarzadeh told Trend.

The director emphasized that the electricity generation capacity of each of these stations will be 40 megawatt-hours. The research is underway on the construction of these stations.

He added that the Giz Galasi dam is located 12 km below from the Khudafarin dam. This dam has a capacity of 62 million cubic meters.

Ghaffarzadeh noted that the dam will regulate 2 billion cubic meters of water per year (1 billion cubic meters for Azerbaijan, 1 billion cubic meters for Iran).

As reported, the Giz Galasi dam began to be filled with water on May 31. A total of 5.5 trillion rials (about $131 million) have been spent on the dam.

The Iranian side says that the dam will supply water to 74,000 hectares of land in the East Azerbaijan and Ardabil provinces of Iran. And this will result in the employment of 85,000 people.
