Most of Georgia's electricity imports come from Azerbaijan

Some 19 percent of electricity imports to Georgia came from Turkey, 35 percent from Russia, and 45 percent from Azerbaijan in 2020, Trend reports via the 2020 report of the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC).

The amount of electricity imported to Georgia in 2020 overall is 1 percent less than in 2019, while the increase compared to 2018 is 6.7 percent.

Electricity imports increased by 117 percent amid a decline in local electricity generation in Georgia, said the Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO).

In total, electricity imports this year amounted to 1.69 billion kWh, which was 37.5 percent of the consumed electricity.

Electricity imports by countries in 4 months of 2021:

• Russia - 1.037 billion kilowatt-hours (including 924 million kWh for Abkhazia);
• Azerbaijan - 499 million kilowatt-hours;
• Turkey - 161.2 million kilowatt-hours.
